Aussie Mates - Sand Free Beach Towel
Take the Memories, Leave the Sand … There are few things better than a day of sun & fun in the surf. But when the fun is done, there are the wet, sand covered towels to leave a trail of grit from the beach to the boat, to the car, to your home. And it seems like you can never get it all up.
Destination Towels has the answer: Take home the memories, leave the sand.
Born at Bondi … Bondi Lifeguard Anthony Glick (“Glick” from Bondi Rescue) has lived the problem. Having your things all damp and covered in grit after a day at the beach. That’s when Anthony decided he needed to find a beach towel to which sand will not stick. Problem: No such towel existed. Solution: Make one.
More than a year of researching and testing dozens of materials under some harsh Australian beach conditions, he had it. An ultra-absorbent, fast-drying beach towel, to which – wet or dry – sand will not stick. Printed front and back using a special process which fights fading. A towel which after countless washings is still ultra-absorbent, sand-free, soft, and beautiful!
What Makes Each Towel So Special? … Anthony is also an accomplished Photographer. Each Destination Towel features an Anthony Glick original image, and is geo-coded to tell you exactly where in the World your beach is. This is a Destination Towel:
- Wet or Dry Sand and Grit Will Not Stick.
- Absorbs 300% More water than Cotton.
- Dries 2 Times faster than Cotton.
- Luxuriously Soft: They do not get scratchy after multiple washings.

- String Bag Backpack for carrying your beach gear.
- Drying Loop: For easy hang drying.

Anthony had developed these great towels and was selling them in shops around Bondi. Anthony’s friends and customers persuaded him that it was time to introduce his towels to the rest of the country.
Always on the look-out for more great authentic Australian gear to bring home to our Friends in America, we could see that Anthony had created something special. Prior to seeing Destination Towels we had not seen or heard of a sand-free beach towel. Since then, a number of brands have popped up in the market – some from Australia – and some have origin stories eerily similar to that of Destination Towels.
Today, you will find any number of brands promoting Sand-Free Beach Towels, across a range of price points. From personal testing and feedback from Friends who visit our Cape Woolamai Outposts we have learned a few things:
- The “discount” towels (<$45) typically do not stand the test of time. After just a few washes: sand begins to stick, they lose their absorbency, they become stiff and scratchy, and they fade. Like normal cotton beach towels.
- The “premium” towels (~$60) typically retain their absorbency and sand-free attributes over time. However, we have heard complaints that they do not absorb as much as people expected, and of designs fading after multiple washes.
We have received absolutely Zero complaints about Destination Towels.
We cannot tell you for sure who developed the 1st Sand-Free Beach Towel (although we think we know). We cannot tell you definitively who makes the Best Sand-Free Beach Towel for you and your family. But we can tell you this:
If you are looking for a great Sand-Free Beach Towel, that absorbs 300% more water than Cotton, dries in ½ the time, stays soft and compact, is printed with gorgeous original images from amazing beaches around the World, and that stands the test of time … if it is not geo-coded to tell you where your beach is … it is not a Destination Towel.
About Aussie Mates … Aussie Mates captures a common sight on the beaches of Lucky Bay in Cape Grand National Park, in the “Golden Outback.” Lucky Bay’s inquisitive Kangaroos commonly roam the shores and the gorgeous white sand beaches. Who can blame them? But no worries, they are happy to share this pristine place with those odd-looking two-legged creatures who come down to the water to relax and rejuvenate.
