When to Use Hat Reducers. In a perfect World, you will find a hat which feels like it was custom made for you. Sadly, we do not always live in a perfect World. Thus, the need for Hat Reducers.
Better to Buy Big … When you find yourself caught between 2 sizes, it is better to buy the larger size. Over time, Leather and Canvas Hats can shrink some. Over time, our heads may grow some, or ever so slightly change shape. And, Hairstyles! Don’t get us started on what changing hairstyles does to how your Hats fit.
Caution … Hat Reducers are intended to help you size a hat which is marginally larger than your ideal fit. If a Medium hat is too small, and Large is too big, a Hat Reducer can fill the gap. We strongly discourage most people from using hat reducers to jump 2 sizes.
Installing Hat Reducers … Installing Hat Reducers is simple, and something you can easily do at home. Here are 7 easy steps for adding Hat Reducers to your Jacaru Hat:
- Place your hat on your head as you wish to wear it.
- Place your 2 Index Fingers (finger tips flat on your forehead) in the Center of your Forehead where you Hat is sitting on your Head.
- Slowly slide your Index Fingers around your head at the base of the Hat. Be careful not to push your hat up. That can negatively affect your fitting.
- When you find a “Cavity” where you Finger Tip(s) slip between the Sweatband and your Head, you have found a place to add a Hat Reducer.
- Continue tracing around your Head until your Fingers meet at the Back of your Head. Make a mental note of any “Cavities” you find.
- Starting with the largest cavity, Add a Hat Reducer between the Inside of the Hat and the Back of the Sweatband. Place the adhesive side against the Hat (not the Sweatband). Place a 2nd Hat Reducer on the opposite side of the Hat to keep the fit symmetrical.
- Try on your Hat. If it is still too large, search for a 2nd cavity. If it is now too snug, cut off a portion of the Hat reducer on each side of the hat. Repeat until you get the right fit for you.
Note: Using Hat Reducers to size your hat is an imprecise science. There are people who need to add more thickness on one side than the other. You will find the right answer for you by following this procedure.
If your Hat does not have a Sweatband, you can still use Hat Reducers to custom fit your Hat. In this instance, we suggest that you place the Hat Reducers approximately ¼” above where the Brim and Gusset meet to help prevent the Hat Reducers from showing when you are wearing your Hat.
